Addiction
Background
News

Addictive disorders take a toll on not only on individuals, but families, communities, and the economy.

To ensure that Americans with addictive disorders receive the right services, in the right setting, at the right time, the National Association of Psychiatric Health Systems (NAPHS) is playing a leadership role through its Addiction Treatment Committee, working on issues related to implementation of the federal parity law, implementation of mental health and addiction treatment as one of the required elements of essential health benefits under healthcare reform, and access and coverage issues for youth.

Addictive disorders affect millions of Americans of all ages.

In the United States, about 18 million people have an alcohol use disorder, classified as either alcohol dependence or alcohol abuse, according to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA).

According to the latest National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), 22.5 million Americans aged 12 or older were current (past month) illicit drug users (8.7% of the population 12 and older in 2011 vs. 8.9% in 2010).

The NSDUH report also shows “the continuation of the vast disparity between the number of people needing treatment for a substance abuse problem and the number who actually receive specialty treatment,” said the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) in releasing the report in 2012. While 21.6 million Americans needed treatment for an illicit drug or alcohol use problem in 2011, only 2.3 million (or 10.8% of those in need) received it in a specialized treatment setting.

Prescription drug abuse is the nation’s fastest-growing drug problem, according to the Office of National Drug Control Policy (Epidemic: Responding to America’s Prescription Drug Abuse Crisis. 2011.
